CALLING ALL PEOPLE INTERESTED IN PEACE IN THE OIL-RICH NIGER DELTA REGION OF NIGERIA TO A PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION

The fragile peace in the Niger Delta was given another deadly blow. It was Mr Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister that delivered the blow. The headline of The Independent Newspaper of Friday, 11 July 2008 captioned the blow as “Brown’s African misdaventure ….PM’s offer of military aid to Nigeria”. The paper went further to clarify the position by saying, ” Mr Brown said that the UK was ready to offer the Nigerian military direct assistance to help return law and order to the southern region and to restore oil output”. Mr Gordon Brown’s statement provoked the immediate collapse of MEND’s three-week old ceasefire in the oil–and-gas-rich region of the Niger Delta.

The Ijaw People’s Association (IPA) of Great Britain and other concerned people of the Niger Delta believe that the statement attributed to the British Prime Minister was unnecessary at this time when the Nigerian Government is talking about a Niger Delta Summit geared towards a negotiated settlement of the crisis.

The people of the Niger Delta have seen too much blood shed because of their oil. Mr Gordon Brown’s military assistance to Nigeria will further encourage the Nigerian Government to bomb, maim, kill, rape and intimidate the people of Niger Delta. Human life is more than a barrel of oil. Neither the Nigerian Government nor any foreign power can protect the oil wells or guarantee the continuous flow of oil from Nigeria to the world market. Only the people of the Niger Delta that can protect and guarantee both. Britain should know where real power lies and support the people of the Niger Delta in order to resolve the problems.

The IPA is therefore, calling on all people of goodwill and peace to join a scheduled demonstration on this Saturday, 19 July 2008 to defend the rights of the Niger Delta people. We must protect our land, people and resources; and stop the planned British military assistance to Nigeria.

WE MUST STAND UP AND SAY, “NO MORE NIGER DELTA BLOOD FOR CHEAP OIL. THE PEOPLE OF THE NIGER DELTA WANT JUSTICE, AND NOT FURTHER ARMED CONFLICT IN THE REGION.
